Tramadol is a pain reliever that relieves mild to moderate pain caused by operation, joint pain or conditions such as cancer.
How it works
Tramadol works by modulating the brain’s response to pain. Sometimes this medicine is used to treat other conditions also. It is also used to treat chronic pain in which case around the clock treatment is required.
How to take it
Tramadol is available as a tablet to be taken orally. You can take one tablet every 4 to 6 hours, either with food or without it. This drug can be addictive, so take only the dose prescribed and do not overdose.
Consult your doctor if you have any doubt after reading the prescription label. Do not take more than 300 milligrams of Tramadol per day. Do not crush the tablet but take it as a whole. Using this medicine as an inhalation or injection is bound to be life threatening.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems or if you are addicted to alcohol or any other drug. In such a case, you may need a drug monitoring or adjustment. It is not clear whether the drug will harm an unborn baby.
You must your doctor if you are pregnant. This is important since your physician will be able to advise you about the possible risks of taking this medication during pregnancy.
If you are above 75 years, you might experience side effects. It is also not advisable to take this drug for children, who are below 16 years of age.
Confide in your doctor if you are breast-feeding the child, as it is not known whether the drug mixes with breast milk. A Tramadol overdose may be fatal, seek emergency help if you have taken an overdose accidentally.
Do not discontinue the drug if you have withdrawal symptoms as a side effect but consult the doctor instead.
There can be some side effects from Tramadol. The most frequently side effects were observed to be
- speech disorders,
- Hepatitis and Liver failure,
- Blurred vision,
- increased heart beat,
- itching of face and other allergic reactions,
- upset stomach,
- difficulty in breathing,
- changes in urination etc.
If you come across any such side effects, seek medical opinion. If you have had a head injury or metabolic disorder, you may experience seizures as a result of taking this drug.
What to avoid
Avoid alcohol while taking Tramadol, as this could lead to decrease in breathing or liver problems. Be careful while driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.
As this drug can cause dizziness, avoid any exerting activities immediately after consuming this drug. You should also avoid tranquilizers, sedatives, sleeping pills and antihistamines as these drugs may induce drowsiness further.
If you have missed a dose and it is time for your regular dose, take only the regular dose. Excess dose will lead to complications that can be fatal.
Store this medicine at a temperature of 25-30 degrees centigrade and in an airtight container. Keep it away from the reach of children.
